We are and you are lucky. The building was built towards the end of the 1890s shortly after the inauguration of the railway line that connected Switzerland (through the San Gottardo tunnel) with northern Italy.
The position was very important then, and still is today.
We are within walking distance of the Lugano railway station, a public transport hub for:
Milan, Zurich, Lucerne, Basel, Malpensa airport with direct connections;
San Moritz with direct connections by postbus offering Bernina Express and Palm Express;
Ponte Tresa with a narrow-gauge local railway and Saturday market;
Many public transport lines for the city and the region.

What time is check-in and check-out?
Check-in is from 2.30PM (on Sundays starting 3PM)
Check-out must be done by 11.30AM
If on the day of check-in you arrive earlier, you can leave your luggage with us and park the car without additional costs. Same service on the day of departure if you still wish to visit the region.
Upon request and for a small fee, it is possible to guarantee the room ready in advance. The rate is proposed at the time of booking.
For transfers to and from Milan Malpensa airport you train for direct connections to / from Lugano.
We remind you that it is possible to reach the hotel on foot from the station, without steps. To do so, please first take the only escalator in the station, up to main station square. You then will see the roof of the hotel. Just follow the only path over a small bridge and downhill then.
How to reach Hotel Federale
When you arrive at the Lugano train station, go up the escalators to the main square of the station (caution: do not take the stairs in the "downtown" direction). From here you cansee the sign of the Hotel Federale, which can be reached by crossing the elevated walkway and walking down the hill to the hotel entrance. The whole way is without stairs.
E35 / A2 motorway: take Lugano Nord exit.
At the roundabout continue towards "Massagno Breganzona". Do NOT follow Lugano. At the next roundabout, which is at the end of the motorway, continue straight.
At the traffic light, take the central lane and follow the signs towards the center of Lugano; Once in a short tunnel, move to the right lane and stop at the traffic light; at the exit of the tunnel immediately turn right.
Follow the road to the small roundabout near the train station - continue straight for about 150 meters.
As soon as possible turn left into a narrow street.
Turn left again and go down the short road; at the end of the road, turn left one last time to reach the hotel entrance.
E35 / A2 motorway: take Lugano Sud exit.
At the traffic lights at the end of the motorway, turn left towards the train station.
Continue along the slope upwards, continue straight ahead and pass 2 more traffic lights.
Once the climb is over, a railway crossing is visible on the left. Stay and continue on the road for another 10 meters and turn right into a small street and down left. Go down the short narrow road; at the end of the road, turn left one last time to reach the hotel entrance.
Lugano is located on the North-South line between Hamburg and Rome. There are numerous direct connects, without train changes, from:
Milano Centrale (ca. 1 hour travel time)
Zurigo HB (ca. 2 hours travel time)
Lucerna (ca. 2 hours travel time)
Basilea SBB (less than 3 hours travel time)

Lugano is located south of the Alps and is particularly close to the Metropolitan area of Milan with its 3 airports. The nearest airport is Milan Malpensa (MXP).
Airports are described in order of distance:
1. Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP) with also EasyJet: There are direct TILO trains from the airport to Lugano SBB station, which is only a 3-minute walk from the hotel. The trip takes about 90 minutes.
2. Milan Linate Airport (LIN):Take the shuttle bus to Milano Centrale, then take the direct train to Lugano. Travel time approx. 2 hours.
3. Milan / Bergamo Orio al Serio Airport (BGY) with Ryanair: With the shuttle bus go to Milano Centrale train station, then take the direct train to Lugano. Travel time approx. 2.5 hours.
4. Zurich Airport (ZRH). Train journey with 1 change in Zurich HB. Travel time approx. 2.5 hours.
